Electrical signals are the currency of neuronal information processing.  Our faculty uon the ionic mechanisms that endow each cell type with its characteristic responses to synaptic input, the patterns of connectivity that deliver specific inputs to each cell, and the dynamics that arise from the combination of these.Synaptic integration and neuronal information processing

Computational models and theory develop frameworks and intuitions about how widespread, incremental computations performed by individual neurons and neuronal networks give rise to system-level behavior.  Our faculty are using mathematical principles combined with theory and experiments to understand neural coding, dynamics and oscillations in neurons and circuits, how complex processes are implemented across scales in the nervous system, and how perceptual events can be extracted from whole brain EEG signals.

Cognitive neuroscience focuses on the neural substrates of mental processes and their behavioral manifestations by combining theories in cognitive psychology and computational modeling with experimental data about the brain.  Our faculty are studying the effects of stress, fear and aging on cognitive control and memory, the neural basis of decisions and motivation, predicting perceptual events from EEG patterns using Brain Computer Interface and deep learning algorithms, lexical access and cognitive control in bilingualism, the developmental trajectory of learning, and the interface between language and other mental processes.
